I may be dating myself with this one, but it’s notable enough to warrant a mention… This weekend I was in the D and it was awesome. One of my favorite record stores was going under (
RIP - Young Soul Rebels), and had everything for 50% off. So I picked up a
Bob Dylan record and a
Kraftwerk record. For those of you who haven’t heard of Kraftwerk, they were essentially the early pioneers of techo music (them and
Bowie of course). German, they’re early hit was in 1975 and was a record called Autobahn, which was spoofed hilariously in the film
The Big Lebowski which featured a group of German nihilists that resembled Kraftwerk. But I digress. I popped in this Kraftwerk record which is called
Computer World and was loving it. When I got to track 5, entitled
Computer Love the melody struck me as something I had heard before, and it was really bugging me. I couldn’t place it for the first few minutes until I finally recognized it as the melody and main hook of a
Coldplay song from their newest record, the song being
Talk (track 5). To say that I’m floored about this is an understatement. It’s a blatant ripoff. They didn’t even change the key of the melody. I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this or if there’s anything that can be done about it, but I think Kraftwerk deserves some recognition here. Thoughts?
End…
